Springfield Walks – Scary Fun Tours

Trying to find something different and exciting to do for Halloween this year?  Eighteen21.com has the inside scoop on Springfield Walks & Tour Guides here in downtown Springfield.  We spoke with Garret Moffett, the 50-year-old owner, and operator of Springfield Walks, to learn about his walking tours.  The Macomb, IL native was kind enough to share with us a bit more about his business and it's Halloween appropriate ghost tours.

What is Springfield Walks?
It is a company that provides walking tours, such as the Lincoln’s Ghost Walk, to locals and visitors of Springfield. We provide tour guide services for visiting groups as well.

Who started Springfield Walks and when?
I started the company here in 2005, and I’m the first to bring this type of tourism service to Springfield; local guide services and walking tours.

Why did you decide to start Springfield Walks – where did you get the idea?
I got the idea after tour guiding through England. I decided to leave nursing and become a tour guide. I noticed that the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum was opening and there was no tour company in Springfield, so I decided to set up shop here.

What do you think makes the walks so popular?
The subject matter is interesting and I’m good at what I do. People are forever fascinated with Lincoln and also the paranormal. I know my subject well and people realize my passion and my sincere delivery. After time with me, people leave with their own connection to Lincoln or sometimes having their own paranormal experience from the other tours.
We advertise through our website, in the visitor's guide, support from the Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau, and word of mouth.

What walking tours do you currently offer?
My main tour is the Lincoln’s Ghost Walk, which covers the strange and bizarre stories of Lincoln’s life and death. Not scary, but fascinating to say the least. A “must do” for anyone interested in Lincoln.
The Ghost Hunters’ Haunted History Tour is for people who like TV ghost shows. It’s a history tour with paranormal 101. I’ll tell you the haunted history and you find the ghosts.
I offer other tours from time to time, check the website.

Any spooky or scary things experienced on a walk?
I’ve had people slapped, pushed, and even scratched on the ghost hunters’ tour and I don’t fake anything. The ghost hunters’ tour is mostly a history tour with paranormal 101, but yes, some strange things have happened.

What is the most popular feature or stop during your fall-time/Halloween tours?
No doubt, our last stop for the night - Norb Andy’s at 518 E. Capitol. There’s a great little tabarin in the basement, but the upstairs unnerves people.

For those scheduling, what do they need to know to be prepared?
Bring someone’s hand to hold and check the website for tour details.

Do you have other events or additions coming soon?
Not at the moment, but always check my website for announcements. I’ve been known to have special tour events like pub-crawls and race riot tours.
