Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Illinois will launch 5000 rubber ducks in the lazy river at Knight’s Action Park on September 4th, 2017.
The inaugural fundraiser will also include a celebrity duck race involving Springfield politicians, service men and women, and community leaders.
Ducks can be purchased for $5 online or by mailing the order form with a check to RMHCCI, 710 N. 7th, Springfield, Illinois, 62702. Ducks can be bought in bulk: a quack pack containing six ducks is $25, the quacker's dozen includes 13 ducks is $50, A family flock of 30 ducks is $100, and the $150 grand pack will get you 50 ducks.
Kelly Thompson, executive director, said the charity was very excited to launch the first annual Labor Day Duck Derby race presented by St. John's Children's Hospital. “Proceeds from the race will directly benefit the sick children and families we serve while their child is receiving medical care in Springfield,” she said. “Our community is always extremely supportive of our efforts, and we hope it will get behind the race and help us sell all 5,000 rubber ducks.”
Race prizes will include $2,500 in cash, $1,000-worth of groceries from County Market, and a BUNN Family Farms half steer and Lowe's Grill.
The race is expected to take about 15 minutes and will run the full course of the lazy river. The celebrity duck race will take place at 10.45am, directly before the derby at 11am.
There will also be plenty of entertainment for children with access to the fortress of fun and a fire truck. Individuals coming to watch the derby will not be charged admission to participate in the race.
Discounted admission to the waterpark on the day of the race is available to all participants via a discount code. The code will be presented at time of purchase. To receive your discounted admission to the waterpark, visit the Knight's Action Park website.
