My not so 9 to 5! Abby Sgro

Company/organization: Giffin, Winning, Cohen & Bodewes, P.C.
Name: Abby Sgro
Title/profession: Associate Attorney
Age: 27

What time does your alarm go off?
Well, that changes with the day. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, it goes off at 5.27am, and on the other weekdays it goes off around 6.30am.

What is the first thing you do when you wake up?
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I rush out of bed to get to my workout by 6am. On the other days (and even most Tuesdays and Thursdays), the first thing I do is check my work email, generally that results in immediately responding to emails.

What do you do for lunch; eat in, out, go to the gym, meetings or work through?
I generally eat at the office in order to limit the amount of time I take during lunch. However, I also have plenty of meetings that take place during lunches. Those meetings range from networking meetings, Continuing Legal Education, meetings with the other attorneys in my office, and meetings for other boards and community involvement. I love the days when I get to go out to lunch with my husband or go workout during lunch, but that is happening less and less.

What are your work hours (be honest)?
This is a very tough question for me to answer as I can work from outside of the office. I have days that the emails start as soon as I wake up and don’t end until I go to bed. But I also have days that I leave the office at 5.30pm and (can make a poor attempt) to not think about work the rest of the night. So, if I am being honest, I cannot pinpoint my work hours. Though, I generally do not allow myself to do any work on Sundays!

What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy being that ear for people to vent, being that voice for someone, being my client’s ally. I love working with people, and I get to work with different people every day.

What do you least like about your job?
The stress. It is a lot of stress to have someone’s life and/or problems on your shoulders. I still have not found a way to not take that home with me at night and to not be kept up at night over that. I would say my other least favorite part is coming across a client or situation that I cannot resolve in the client’s favor.

What do you do to develop relationships with potential clients?
I try to be involved in networking groups that allow me to meet many members of the community in order for me to meet others from all walks of life. I also try my best to set-up lunch appointments with the people I meet so they can get to know me better as a person. I think connecting with people on a personal level makes them more likely to bring their business to you.

Which organizations are you a member of/volunteer for?
I am a board member and registration chair for Illinois Women in Leadership, a volunteer and task force member for the Illinois Innocence Project, a pro-bono attorney for Sojourn Shelter, a training member of the Criminal Justice Action Panel (CJA), a wish-granter for the Make-A-Wish foundation, a member of the Sangamon County Bar Association and the Central Illinois Women’s Bar Association, and a founding member of the Junior Circle of Hope.

What is the first thing you do when you get home?
The first thing I do when I get home is change into my pajamas and play with my dog. Quickly followed by making dinner with my husband.

What’s the last thing you do before you go to sleep?
I have been trying very hard to disconnect about 30 minutes before bed and not even look at my cellphone otherwise my brain will never stop. So I watch mindless television to try to relax my brain and enjoy time with my wonderful husband.
