Holiday Farmers Markets – Fresh Winter Produce

2016 will mark the 10th annual Holiday Farmers Markets at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. The event, sponsored by Illinois Stewardship Alliance, Slow Food Springfield, Illinois Wine, and the University of Illinois Extension, is free and open to the public.  There will be two holiday markets with the first being held on Saturday, November 19th in the Expo Building and the second on Saturday, December 17th in the Illinois Building. From 9am to 1pm, over 30 vendors from Central Illinois will be selling an assortment of goods including beef, pork, eggs, poultry, pasture-raised turkeys, cheese, craft beer, coffee, wine, and honey as well as produce ranging from carrots, apples, and squash, to garlic, potatoes, and greens.

Come see how our local farmers have found new and inventive ways to elongate growing seasons to provide us with fresh produce options throughout the winter months.  Traditionally conceived as dry periods in regards to non-canned fruits and vegetables, we are now able to share fresh foods with our children and future generations - promoting the use of local ingredients that provide the natural nutrients needed to build strong bodies while encouraging healthy food choices within our community.

So, have a visit and get fresh meats and produce just in time for your big Thanksgiving meal.  For those wishing to pick up a Thanksgiving turkey, Garden Gate Farm is accepting pre-orders on pasture raised, non-GMO turkeys between six to 24 lbs. priced at $4/lb.  To place your order, please e-mail dougrink68@icloud.com or call 815-848-3518.

Bring the whole family out to enjoy the day as the University of Illinois will be hosting several kid-friendly activities and Copper Pot Cooking Studio will be preparing lunch items for purchase such as chili, herbed biscuits, crepes, and squash and apple bisque.

Craft and art vendors can register, space permitting, by creating an account at www.managemymarket.com and selecting Springfield Holiday Farmers Markets.  For more information call the Illinois Stewardship Alliance at (217) 528-1563.
