Pint of Vanilla Dream Ale at Hand of Fate Petersburg Illinois

In the heart of Petersburg a new craft brewery continues to gain momentum amongst those who have come to sample the latest offerings. Hand of Fate is the brainchild of Mike Allison formerly a funeral director and current resident of the small town northwest of Springfield, Illinois, who now dedicates his time to whetting the palettes of ale enthusiasts from near and far. Mike is joined by his wife, Brie, who is responsible for the front of the house.

Hand of Fate occupies one of the many buildings that make up the square in downtown Petersburg. Built in the 1960s the current building replaced two much older properties, one of which was a Finney’s pharmacy. Mike, who has been homebrewing for more than a decade, began work on the local brewery in November 2014 and opened it to the public on May 13th this year. With a love of history and preserving it for future generations, the wood used for the bar tables came from the old New Salem Lodge and the ceiling tiles on the outside of the building from the old fire house.

The brewery also boasts a meeting space, known as Harry’s Place. Harry was the father of Mike’s landlord and business partner, Holly, and it was Joel Gain, the cabinet maker, that worked for Harry, who had lovingly salvaged the wood from the old New Salem Lodge, which now takes pride of place in the bar. The ‘long table’, a favorite gathering place amongst locals, is made from wood sawn at the New Salem Mill in the mid-1800s.
With the line-up of brews changing constantly, you’ll never run out of new tipples to try. Amongst some of Mike’s current favorites are Gose, a sour German wheat beer, and Jucy, American Pale Ale. We’re fans of Tipping Cow, a milk chocolate stout – it’s a must try.
Hand of Fate will also soon have its very own restaurant thanks to Jessica Stock of Dr. Ugs in Virginia.

One of our favorite takeaways is a warm atmosphere, the chance to relax with friends, have a drink and even play a board game or two – provided by the hosts. So, visit Hand of Fate and don’t forget to leave a lasting impression by signing your name on the wall!
