A panel judged 225 students for the 2018 COUNTRY Financial Scholarship

A record-breaking 377 applications were started with 225 submitted for the 2018 COUNTRY Financial Scholarship, which met the criteria and were reviewed by a judging panel.

The successful applicants will be revealed in May.

In February Eighteen21 announced that Country Financial was launching a scholarship for college students that had demonstrated excellence in community service and lived in Sangamon, Menard, Macoupin, Montgomery, Cass, Morgan, and Greene counties. Of the 225 applicants, 10 will be chosen and will each receive $2,000.

Jay Davis, of COUNTRY Financial in Springfield and one of the sponsors of the new grant program, said he was delighted with the response. “The fact that so many students qualified for the grant across seven counties demonstrates the exemplary nature of our youngsters today and their dedication to our community,” said Jay. Eligible students had to show a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a non-weighted 4.0 scale, be an extraordinary example of service to others and to the community, be a full-time student in the coming academic year at an accredited, nonprofit, public/private college/university, or vocational/technical institution, with no limitation as to the location of that institution, and must be a 1st to 4th year college student in the fall of 2018.

‘I applaud each and every one of them and know that it will have been a very difficult task for the judges to select just 10 recipients from the hundreds that applied. We are so excited about the response and look forward to supporting even more students, and their families, in and around Springfield in the future.’

Within the seven counties Sangamon attracted the most applicants at 121, then Montgomery at 46, Macoupin 22, Morgan and Greene 16 each, Menard six and Cass one.
