Whether you’re for or against buying a home with a pool, Eighteen21’s expert Realtor, Deb Sarsany of The Deb Sarsany Team at The Real Estate Group, walks us through some of the pros and cons.
If you own a pool you’re undoubtedly ‘the cool house.’ If you have teenagers and you want to know where they are at all times - if you have a pool - chances are you’ll find them in it, with their friends, for most of the summer vacation. Plus having a pool provides a great excuse to have friends and family over for backyard BBQs.
When it comes to selling your home if you have a pool you are likely to attract those wanting one, right? Definitely. Having a pool in your backyard will likely increase the value of your home compared with similar homes in the area that do not have one. If you are selling a home with a pool it’s probably a good idea to put it on the market while the weather is good so that you can show it off in all its glory.
Conversely, a pool can mean added expense that buyers just aren’t willing to take on. If you purchase a home with a pool you will incur maintenance costs, which can mount up. However, if you’re willing to do the work yourself the maintenance costs are much more affordable.
When something goes wrong with the pool you’ll probably need to dip into your savings, as repairs are costly. If you are desperate to buy a home with a pool then ask your Realtor to be on the look out for newer homes. Whatever you decide, new or old house/pool, make sure you get a thorough inspection before buying the home.
It’s worth noting that owning a home with a pool will increase your liability insurance so you may want to consult your insurance advisor before purchasing the property.
You may want to look into getting a salt-water pool. This will cost you more in the beginning, but your investment will be made back in two years. A solar panel to heat the pool is something else to consider if you plan on staying in the home for a period of time.
At the end of the day if you can afford to purchase a home with a pool, keep up with the maintenance and have plenty of savings put aside for repairs, if you have children owning a pool can be a great investment and way to spend time as a family.
