It’s important to be aware of the benefits of chiropractic year round, according to Dr. Bryne Willey of AlignLife of Springfield Chiropractic & Natural Health Center.
Each year, National Chiropractic Health Month, which occurs in October, aims to raise public awareness of chiropractic services as a first line of defense against pain. This serves as a positive reminder, however, chiropractic, which focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health, should always be kept at the forefront in the minds of those in pain.
Dr. Bryne said diagnosing a patient is just the beginning of the treatment process. “I would first assess the patients through clinical examination, x-rays, and other diagnostic interventions to determine when and what treatment is appropriate or when it is not,” he said. Chiropractors will readily refer patients to the appropriate healthcare provider when chiropractic care is not suitable for the patient’s condition or the condition warrants co-management in conjunction with other healthcare providers.
In many cases, such as with low-back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, chiropractic care may be a patient’s primary method of treatment. “When other medical conditions exist, chiropractic may support medical treatment by relieving the musculoskeletal issues associated with the patient’s condition,” said Dr. Bryne.
One of the most common and well-known beneficial procedures performed by chiropractors is spinal manipulation, sometimes referred to as a chiropractic adjustment. “Manipulation, or adjustment of the affected joint and tissues, helps to restore mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, allowing tissues to heal,” said Dr. Bryne.
Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal complaints. A referral is usually not needed to see a chiropractor, however, your health plan may have specific referral requirements.
If you are visiting a chiropractor for the first time be specific about your symptoms. “This will help your chiropractor offer the safest and most effective treatment, even if it involves referral to another healthcare provider,” said Dr. Bryne.
Chiropractic is safe for all the family from infants to seniors. Dr. Bryne recommends that if you or a family member is suffering from joint or muscular pain visit a chiropractor before turning to more aggressive interventions. “Just remember, those options will always be there if needed down the road, but it’s recommended to try more conservative options first.”
